Why More Luxury Travellers Are Choosing to Travel Outside Peak Season

Positano, Amalfi Coast

For many people, July and August still feel like the obvious time to travel.

But experienced travellers are making a different choice.

Instead of travelling at the busiest time of year, they're choosing what the travel industry calls the shoulder season - the weeks just before or just after peak season, typically May and June, or September and October depending on the destination.

It's not simply about avoiding crowds.

It's about experiencing a destination in a way that's often more relaxed, more authentic and, in many cases, more enjoyable.

What makes shoulder season so appealing?

One of the biggest differences is space.

Instead of busy restaurants, bustling piazzas and fully booked attractions, destinations naturally slow down. You can wander through towns, linger over lunch overlooking the sea and explore at your own pace, without feeling rushed or surrounded by other visitors.

That slower pace often changes how a destination feels. It becomes easier to appreciate its character, enjoy quieter moments and experience a sense of exclusivity that's difficult to find during the height of summer.

Hotels also tend to feel different. When a property isn't operating at full capacity, service can feel more personal. Teams often have more time for each guest, creating a calmer, more attentive experience.

The weather can also work in your favour. In many Mediterranean destinations, September and early October still bring warm sunshine and sea temperatures that are perfect for swimming, but without the intense midsummer heat.

For many travellers, it's simply a more relaxed and rewarding way to experience a destination.

Luxury can become more accessible

While luxury hotels are rarely inexpensive, travelling outside peak season can often open the door to properties that might otherwise feel just beyond reach.

Rates frequently soften once school holidays end, particularly across Europe. That can mean experiencing hotels you've always wanted to stay in, simply by travelling at a different time of year.

Availability is often better too, giving you more choice of room categories and travel dates.

Our Amalfi Coast experience

One of our favourite examples of shoulder season travelling was the Amalfi Coast in late October.

The weather was exceptional. We swam in the sea on a Monday morning, enjoyed long lunches overlooking the coastline and explored Positano's beautiful streets without the crowds that fill them throughout the summer.

Restaurants that would have been almost impossible to book in peak season suddenly had availability.

Driving the famous coastal road was noticeably easier, without the constant stream of coaches and heavy traffic.

Most memorably, we were able to stay at two of the Amalfi Coast's most iconic hotels - Le Sirenuse and Hotel Santa Caterina - at rates that would have been significantly higher just a few weeks earlier.

It reminded us that luxury travel isn't always about spending more. Sometimes it's simply about travelling at the right time.

Destinations that shine outside peak season

Amalfi Coast, Italy

September and October bring warm seas, beautiful light and a much more relaxed atmosphere. Villages such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello become easier to enjoy once the busiest summer crowds have gone.

Mallorca, Spain

With warm temperatures well into October, Mallorca offers beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants and peaceful countryside without the intensity of peak summer tourism.

Greek Islands

Many islands remain wonderfully warm into early autumn. Ferry crossings are less crowded, popular restaurants are easier to book and coastal villages regain a slower rhythm.

Provence, France

September brings the grape harvest to Provence, making it a wonderful time to explore vineyards, browse local markets and discover hilltop villages at a gentler pace.

The Algarve, Portugal

The sea stays warm well into autumn, coastal towns become noticeably quieter and many of the Algarve's finest hotels feel calmer and more exclusive once the summer crowds have gone.

Planning your next trip?

The best luxury holidays aren't always defined by where you go. Often, they're shaped by when you go.

Choosing the right season can completely change the experience, from the atmosphere of a destination to the hotel you stay in and the memories you take home.

If you're planning your next escape and wondering whether shoulder season could be the perfect fit, we'd be delighted to help you find the right destination, the right hotel and, where available, unlock exclusive partner benefits to make your stay even more rewarding.
